The Homestead, The Showcase

Chicago’s first-ever container farm — launched by Freight to Plate

The Opportunity

In 2020, Freight to Plate identified a rare opportunity: transform an unused parcel of land into Chicago’s first publicly accessible container farm.
The goal was ambitious — build a functional, educational, and community-centered farm that could serve as a living model for how hyperlocal agriculture could work across the city.

Homestead became the testing ground, the teaching ground, and the proof-of-concept that container farms could be integrated into Chicago’s urban landscape.

Our Approach

Freight to Plate led the project from concept to activation, turning an empty lot into a vibrant, operating food system asset.

Our work included:

  • Activating Chicago’s first container farm and establishing it as a public-facing demonstration site

  • Developing a citywide playbook in partnership with the Chicago Department of Buildings on how to permit, integrate, and regulate container farms

  • Designing the farm as an educational hub for community members, chefs, students, investors, and organizations interested in CEA and hyperlocal food systems

  • Training aspiring growers and operators through hands-on workshops and open farm sessions

  • Growing custom microgreens and leafy greens for Michelin-star chefs and boutique hospitality partners

  • Hosting community and professional events including wellness groups, networking events, private gatherings, and local business meetups

Homestead quickly evolved into a showcase of what’s possible — a farm, a classroom, an events venue, and a technology demonstration site all in one.

So fresh. So clean. So green.
